Feel. Bake. Better.

Emotional Baking
bored herb and garlic cheese roll.
I’m bored. So bored.
It can’t possibly get any worse…
...can it?
Ugh, I take that back it can get worse. I have to do something, anything (as long as it’s productive). I think I’ll bake.
I'm feeling...
something that’s fun to make (and so puts an end to this boredom),
something I can throw together with a few pantry ingredients,
something that’s savoury, delicious, and full of flavour,
something that’s not so involved that it turns boredom into stress…
TLDR:
  • I’m bored
  • I’ll bake
  • Herb and Garlic Cheese Roll
  • Butter, Garlic, Cheese
  • Exciting
This roll has the perfect ratio of butter, garlic, cheese and basil to bread. Delicious! It’s fun to make and, excitingly, the boredom all but disappears in the process.

Makes 1 loaf
Ingredients
  • 1 tsp, heaped, active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup + 2 tbsp warm water
  • 1 ½ tbsp honey, warmed
  • 1 ¾ cups + 1 ½ tbsp (290 g) all purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tsp coarse sea salt
Filling
  • 2 tbsp (28 g) salted butter, room temperature
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • ½ cup (42 g) grated cheddar cheese
  • Pinch of table salt
Instructions
I’m bored - let’s do this…
Put parchment paper inside of a loaf pan. Set aside.
Pour the warm water and honey into a large bowl. Stir in the yeast.
Slowly mix in the flour and salt and knead together until it becomes a rough mound. You can do this by hand or use a stand mixer.
Starting to feel a little less bored…
Continue to knead the dough for 5 minutes, on a floured surface, adding more flour as needed, until it appears smooth and well incorporated.
Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for 40 minutes.
It’s hard to (continue to) feel bored when I’m being so productive.
Make the garlic butter: mix the butter with the garlic. Set aside.
Roll out the dough, then generously spread the garlic butter on top (reserving whatever’s left to be used later), sprinkle the basil and cheese on next. Roll it up.
Okay, this part has me officially shifting into “fun” territory.
Place the roll in the loaf pan and cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for 40 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Melt what’s left of the garlic butter in the microwave and brush the loaf with it. Sprinkle the loaf with salt.
Bake for 30 minutes, on the lowest rack in the oven until it becomes golden brown.
The smells floating in the air – garlic, butter and melting cheese, bring excitement for what’s to come….
Cool slightly before slicing into rounds and enjoy with a dollop of leftover garlic butter.
Well, the boredom’s gone - it’s been replaced with fun, and I’m left with a tasty snack. Excellent!
